Why do we miss someone who hurt us? Learn how trauma bonds, emotional highs and lows, attachment, and hope can keep us emotionally connected to unhealthy relationships.
One of the hardest questions after an unhealthy relationship is:
"If they hurt me so badly, why do I still miss them?"
Missing someone doesn't automatically mean the relationship was healthy.
And strong attachment doesn't always mean we found the right person.
Sometimes we're attached to a cycle.
When affection, attention, conflict, distance, and reconciliation repeatedly cycle, the emotional experience can become incredibly intense.
The relief we feel when connection returns may strengthen our attachment to the relationship.
We aren't only missing the person.
We may miss the relief.
The hope.
The validation.
The version of them we kept waiting to see again.
You may:
Strong feelings are real.
But real feelings don't automatically equal healthy love.
We can deeply desire someone who is inconsistent.
We can love someone who isn't emotionally safe.
We can miss someone and still choose not to return.
That is one of the hardest lessons in healing.
Healing often requires reducing the behaviors that keep the emotional cycle active.
Checking their social media.
Rereading messages.
Waiting for contact.
Romanticizing the beginning.
Ignoring the full pattern.
The goal isn't to deny that we loved them.
It's to begin choosing reality alongside our feelings.
