THE SELF-TRUST METHOD™
What is The Self-Trust Method™?
The Self-Trust Method™ is Shawni McDonald's signature framework for rebuilding self-trust after self-abandonment.
Instead of focusing only on healing from the past, it helps women develop the mindset, behaviors, emotional regulation, and decision-making skills needed to trust themselves for the rest of their lives.
Because healing wasn't about finding a better partner.
It was about becoming the woman you could finally trust.
Why is self-trust so important?
Many women don't struggle because they lack intelligence or strength.
They struggle because somewhere along the way they stopped trusting themselves.
Self-trust affects every area of life:

- emotional well-being
When self-trust grows, everything else becomes easier to navigate.

Additional Frequently Asked Questions...
SELF-TRUST
What exactly is self-trust?
Self-trust is the confidence that you'll listen to yourself, honor your values, and make decisions that align with the life you want to create. It's the foundation for healthy relationships, strong boundaries, and lasting emotional well-being.
Why do women lose self-trust?
Self-trust is often lost gradually through people-pleasing, repeated self-sacrifice, unhealthy relationships, chronic stress, or experiences that taught us to question our own instincts. The good news is that self-trust can be rebuilt, one decision at a time.
What are signs I've lost self-trust?
Common signs include constantly second-guessing yourself, seeking reassurance, ignoring your intuition, struggling to set boundaries, overthinking decisions, and prioritizing everyone else's needs above your own.
Can self-trust really be rebuilt?
Absolutely. Self-trust isn't something you're born with or without. It's a skill developed through consistent choices, healthy boundaries, emotional awareness, and keeping the promises you make to yourself.
Why do I constantly second-guess myself?
Many women learn to doubt themselves after years of criticism, manipulation, or putting others' opinions ahead of their own. Rebuilding self-trust means learning to value your own judgment again.
Why do I ignore red flags?
Often, it's because hope, familiarity, or fear becomes louder than intuition. Learning to recognize patterns instead of focusing only on potential is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen self-trust.
Why do I keep choosing the wrong people?
Many of us repeat familiar patterns until we become aware of them. Lasting change begins by strengthening the relationship you have with yourself before focusing on finding the right relationship.
Why do I always doubt my decisions?
When self-trust has been weakened, even small decisions can feel overwhelming. As you rebuild confidence in yourself, decision-making becomes clearer, calmer, and less emotionally exhausting.
Why do I know what to do but struggle to do it?
Knowing and doing are two different skills. Fear, survival patterns, emotional habits, and nervous system responses can all make it difficult to act. That's why lasting change focuses on both mindset and behavior.
What happens when self-trust comes back?
You begin making decisions with greater confidence, setting healthier boundaries, trusting your intuition, worrying less about other people's approval, and creating a life that feels more peaceful and authentic.
SURVIVAL MODE
What is survival mode?
Survival mode is your mind and body's natural response to prolonged stress, uncertainty, or emotional overwhelm. While it helps protect you during difficult times, staying there too long can make peace, rest, and self-trust feel unfamiliar.
How do I know if I'm living in survival mode?
You may feel constantly anxious, emotionally exhausted, hypervigilant, disconnected from yourself, or like you're always waiting for something to go wrong. Many women don't realize survival mode has become their normal until they begin rebuilding.
Why do I always feel anxious?
Anxiety can have many causes, but chronic stress and prolonged survival mode often keep the nervous system on high alert. Learning emotional regulation and self-trust skills can help you feel calmer and more grounded.
Why do I feel emotionally exhausted all the time?
When you're constantly managing stress, overthinking, or carrying everyone else's emotional load, your mind and body rarely get a chance to rest. Emotional exhaustion is often a sign that something needs your attention, not your judgment.
Why can't I relax even when nothing is wrong?
Many women become so accustomed to stress that calm feels unfamiliar. Rebuilding emotional safety helps your nervous system recognize that peace is no longer something to fear.
Can survival mode affect my relationships?
Yes. Survival mode can influence communication, boundaries, trust, emotional regulation, and the relationships we choose. Understanding these patterns helps create healthier connections moving forward.
Can survival mode affect my confidence?
Absolutely. Living in survival mode often leads to self-doubt, indecision, and relying on others for reassurance. As you rebuild self-trust, confidence naturally grows.
How do I begin getting out of survival mode?
Start by building awareness. Learn to recognize your patterns, regulate your emotions, strengthen self-trust, and make small choices that reinforce emotional safety. Lasting change happens one healthy decision at a time.
TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS
Why is it so hard to leave?
Leaving isn't only about ending a relationship. It's often about untangling emotional attachment, fear, hope, financial concerns, family dynamics, and deeply ingrained patterns. Your difficulty doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're human.
Why do I still love someone who hurt me?
Love and pain can exist at the same time. Emotional attachment doesn't always disappear simply because someone treated you poorly. Understanding the patterns behind that attachment can help you move forward with greater clarity.
Why do I keep hoping they'll change?
Hope is a beautiful quality, but lasting relationships are built on consistent behavior, not potential. Learning to evaluate patterns instead of promises is an important step toward healthier relationships.
What is a trauma bond?
A trauma bond is a strong emotional attachment that can develop through cycles of affection, conflict, and inconsistency. Understanding these patterns can help explain why leaving or moving on may feel much harder than expected.
How do I know if it's love or a trauma bond?
Healthy love brings consistency, respect, emotional safety, and trust. Trauma bonds often involve confusion, anxiety, highs and lows, and feeling emotionally dependent on the relationship.
Why do I miss them even though they treated me badly?
Missing someone doesn't always mean the relationship was healthy. It's common to miss the connection, the hope, or the future you imagined while still recognizing the relationship wasn't good for you.
Why do I keep going back?
Returning to familiar patterns is common when self-trust has been weakened. The goal isn't to judge yourself but to understand what keeps pulling you back so you can create a different future.
Why do I blame myself?
Many women assume they could have fixed the relationship if they had tried harder. Lasting growth begins when you stop carrying responsibility for another person's choices and start rebuilding compassion for yourself.
Can healthy relationships feel boring after toxic ones?
Sometimes. If your nervous system has become accustomed to chaos, consistency can initially feel unfamiliar. As emotional safety becomes your new normal, healthy relationships begin to feel more comfortable and fulfilling.
Can someone really change?
People can change when they genuinely take responsibility for their behavior and consistently do the work over time. Lasting change is demonstrated through repeated actions, not promises alone. The more important question is whether the relationship consistently supports your emotional safety, well-being, and values.
BOUNDARIES
Why do I feel guilty setting boundaries?
Many women have been taught that saying "no" is selfish or that keeping the peace is more important than honoring their needs. Healthy boundaries aren't about pushing people away. They're about protecting your well-being and creating relationships built on mutual respect.
What if people get upset when I set boundaries?
Not everyone will like your boundaries, especially if they're used to benefiting from the absence of them. Someone else's discomfort doesn't automatically mean you've done something wrong.
What's the difference between boundaries and control?
Boundaries define what you will and won't accept. Control tries to manage another person's behavior. Healthy boundaries are about your choices, not forcing someone else to change.
How do I stop people-pleasing?
People-pleasing often develops as a survival strategy. Rebuilding self-trust means learning that your worth isn't measured by how much you sacrifice for others.
How do I say no without feeling guilty?
Remember that saying yes to everything often means saying no to yourself. Boundaries become easier as you learn to trust that protecting your peace is healthy, not selfish.
Can boundaries save a relationship?
Healthy boundaries can strengthen healthy relationships by creating trust, clarity, and respect. They cannot change someone who repeatedly chooses unhealthy behaviors.
IDENTITY
How do I find myself again?
You don't need to become someone new. You need to reconnect with the person beneath the fear, self-doubt, and survival patterns. That process begins with learning to trust yourself again.
Why do I feel like I lost myself?
Many women slowly lose their sense of self after years of prioritizing other people's needs, approval, or expectations. The good news is that what feels lost can be rebuilt.
Can I rebuild my confidence after emotional abuse?
Absolutely. Confidence grows as you begin keeping promises to yourself, making decisions you trust, and recognizing your own strength instead of defining yourself by your past.
How do I become emotionally stronger?
Emotional strength isn't about never struggling. It's about responding with greater awareness, resilience, and self-trust even when life feels difficult.
How do I stop living for everyone else?
Start by asking yourself a simple question before making decisions:
"What would I choose if I trusted myself?"
Small moments of choosing yourself create lasting change.
Can I become the woman I used to be?
Maybe.
But you may become someone even stronger.
The goal isn't to go backward.
It's to become the woman you're proud of becoming today.
CBT & MINDSET
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach that explores the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By becoming more aware of unhelpful thinking patterns, we can begin creating healthier responses and lasting change.
Why do you use CBT-informed tools?
Because awareness alone rarely changes behavior.
CBT helps transform insight into practical action by teaching simple skills you can apply in everyday life.
Can CBT help with overthinking?
Many people find CBT techniques helpful for recognizing repetitive thought patterns, challenging unhelpful beliefs, and developing more balanced ways of thinking.
Can CBT help me stop negative self-talk?
CBT-informed exercises can help you notice automatic thoughts, question whether they're accurate, and replace them with healthier, more balanced perspectives over time.
Do I need any psychology experience?
Not at all.
Everything I create is written in simple, practical language so you can immediately begin applying what you're learning.
Are your resources based on research?
Yes. My work combines established CBT principles, relationship psychology, emotional regulation, behavior change research, and practical coaching tools in a way that's easy to understand and apply.
BOOKS
Which book should I read first?
That depends on where you are today.
If you're trying to understand why leaving felt so difficult, begin with It's Not Him, It's Your Brain.
If you want practical CBT exercises, start with Rewire Your Mind.
If you're emotionally exhausted and feel stuck, begin with Out of Survival Mode.
If you're unsure, take the Survival Mode & Self-Trust Assessment™ for a personalized recommendation.
Can I read the books in any order?
Yes. Every book is designed to stand on its own while also complementing the others.
Are the books only for women leaving relationships?
No. While many resources focus on rebuilding after unhealthy relationships, the tools can also help with self-confidence, emotional wellness, boundaries, stress, mindset, and personal growth.
Are there exercises inside the books?
Yes. Many books include guided reflections, practical exercises, CBT-informed activities, journaling prompts, and actionable tools designed to help you apply what you're learning.
Are your books appropriate for therapists or coaches?
Many mental health professionals, coaches, and educators appreciate the practical exercises and educational format. However, the books are designed for personal growth and are not clinical manuals.
COURSES
Are your courses self-paced?
Yes. Most courses are designed so you can learn at your own pace and revisit lessons whenever you need them.
How much time should I set aside each week?
Most women find that setting aside 20 to 30 minutes several times a week allows them to make meaningful progress while fitting learning into everyday life.
Can I access my courses on my phone?
Yes. Most courses can be accessed from your computer, tablet, or mobile device.
Will I have lifetime access?
Course access varies by program. Please review the individual course page for the most up-to-date information.
Do the courses include worksheets?
Many courses include downloadable workbooks, exercises, reflection pages, and practical tools to help reinforce what you're learning.
RESULTS
How long before I notice changes?
Everyone's journey is different. Many women experience new insights quickly, while lasting transformation develops through consistent practice and applying what they learn over time.
Will I ever stop second-guessing myself?
As self-trust grows, many women find they spend less time seeking reassurance and more time making decisions with confidence and clarity.
Can I really become confident again?
Yes. Confidence isn't something you're born with or permanently lose. It grows every time you choose yourself, honor your values, and follow through on your commitments to yourself.
Is it too late for me to change?
Never.
Growth has no age limit. Wherever you are today can become the starting point for a completely different future.
THE SELF-TRUST METHOD™
Why do you focus on self-trust instead of confidence?
Confidence often depends on success or experience.
Self-trust is deeper.
It's the ability to rely on yourself, even when life feels uncertain. When self-trust grows, confidence naturally follows.
What does "become the safest person in your own life" mean?
It means becoming someone who protects your peace, honors your values, listens to your intuition, and no longer abandons yourself to gain someone else's approval.
What is self-abandonment?
Self-abandonment happens when we repeatedly ignore our own needs, values, boundaries, or intuition in order to please others, avoid conflict, or maintain relationships at our own expense.
Why do you talk about identity reconstruction?
Because lasting transformation isn't just about changing your thoughts.
It's about changing the way you see yourself and the choices you believe you're capable of making.
What I hope every woman takes away from my work?
I hope every woman walks away knowing she doesn't need to be perfect to trust herself.
She doesn't need all the answers before taking the next step.
And she doesn't need someone else to rescue her.
I want her to become the woman she can always count on.
FOR MEN
I'm a man. Can your books and resources help me too?
Yes.
While my work was intentionally created with women in mind, the psychology, CBT-informed tools, relationship principles, emotional regulation strategies, and mindset concepts can benefit anyone who wants to better understand themselves and create healthier relationships.
Many men have shared that the books helped them recognize unhealthy patterns, improve communication, strengthen emotional awareness, and rebuild their own confidence and self-trust.
Are your books only for women?
No.
Although the examples and conversations are often written from a woman's perspective, the principles of self-awareness, emotional regulation, boundaries, cognitive behavioral strategies, and personal growth are universal.
Many men, couples, coaches, and therapists have found value in these resources.
Which book should I start with as a man?
That depends on your goals.
If you want to understand relationship patterns and why unhealthy dynamics can be difficult to leave, start with It's Not Him, It's Your Brain.
If you're looking to strengthen your mindset using practical CBT techniques, Rewire Your Mind is an excellent place to begin.
If you've been feeling emotionally overwhelmed, constantly stressed, or stuck in survival mode, Out of Survival Mode provides practical strategies for creating greater calm and resilience.
Do you coach men?
My coaching practice is currently dedicated to women because that is where my personal experience, professional focus, and methodology are centered.
However, many of my books, courses, and educational resources can absolutely benefit men who are committed to personal growth, emotional wellness, and building healthier relationships.
Can couples use these resources together?
Absolutely.
Many couples work through the books and discussion exercises together to better understand communication patterns, emotional triggers, boundaries, and healthier ways of responding to one another.
Learning together often creates deeper conversations and a stronger foundation for lasting change.
I'm a father. Can these resources help me become a better partner and parent?
Yes.
Learning emotional regulation, strengthening self-awareness, setting healthy boundaries, and improving communication benefits every relationship in your life, including the relationship you have with your children.
When we learn to respond rather than react, we often create calmer, healthier environments for the people we love.
I'm here because I want to understand someone I love. Is that okay?
Absolutely.
Many people arrive here because they want to better understand a partner, family member, or friend. While you can't change another person's choices, you can gain insight into relationship dynamics, communication, boundaries, and the role self-trust plays in creating healthier relationships.
A Personal Note
Although my mission is centered on helping women rebuild self-trust after self-abandonment, I genuinely believe the skills that create healthier lives, such as emotional awareness, personal responsibility, self-trust, healthy boundaries, and respectful relationships, benefit everyone.
If you're here with an open mind and a desire to grow, you're welcome here.
My hope is that every resource encourages healthier relationships, beginning with the relationship we each have with ourselves.
